Speaker's reference, semantic reference, sneaky reference

چکیده
According to what is perhaps the dominant picture of reference, a referential term refers in context determined by speaker intends for her audience identify as referent. I argue that this sort broadly Gricean view entails, counterintuitively, it impossible knowingly use terms ways one expects or be misunderstood. Then sketch an alternative which can better account such opaque uses language, call “sneaky reference.” close reflecting on ramifications these arguments theory meaning more broadly.

Four centuries after René Descartes watched a fly walk across his ceiling and wondered how to capture its position (Gribbin 2002), we use Cartesian coordinates routinely to describe locations. We identify the positions of entities in the real world, transform their GIS representations from one coordinate system to another, and integrate spatially referenced data across multiple coordinate syste...

What is needed to enable communication about observation and measurement results in information systems? Information system ontologies make a certain conceptualization explicit and partially account for the meanings of symbols associated with this conceptualization. Yet, the meaning of symbols denoting observation results such as /100m/, /328ft/ or /deep/ cannot be specified with currently avai...
متن کاملImplementing Semantic Reference Systems
The analogy of Semantic Reference Systems proposed in (Kuhn in press) is being explored here with respect to the computational mechanisms it suggests. Semantic referencing, grounding in a semantic datum, semantic projection, and semantic transformation are defined and demonstrated through an implementation of a semantic reference system for a simple vehicle navigation model. The idea of wrappin...
متن کاملSpeaker Adaptation Using Multiple Reference Speakers
We introduce a new technique for using the speech of multiple reference speakers as a basis for speaker adaptation in large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. In contrast to other methods that use a pooled reference model, this technique normalizes the training speech from multiple reference speakers to a single common feature space before pooling it. The normalized and pooled speech can...
